NAMIBIA and Serbia have strengthened security cooperation through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing collaboration between the two countries’ law enforcement agencies in combating transnational crime and improving public safety.

The agreement was signed in Belgrade by Namibia’s Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, Lucia Iipumbu, and Serbia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Ivica Dačić.

The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation in preventing, investigating and prosecuting serious criminal offences, including terrorism and its financing, illicit drug production and trafficking, cybercrime, organised crime, human trafficking, money laundering and other forms of economic crime.

It also provides for coordinated action in cases where criminal activities in one country are connected to the other or pose a security threat to either nation.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Iipumbu described the agreement as an important milestone in the growing relationship between Namibia and Serbia, reflecting both countries’ commitment to promoting peace, security and effective law enforcement.

She said the cooperation would be mutually beneficial and contribute to strengthening Namibia’s security capabilities through knowledge sharing, institutional cooperation and capacity building.

The agreement further provides for professional training, the exchange of trainees and the development of short- and long-term programmes aimed at improving the skills and administrative capacity of law enforcement institutions.

Dačić said Namibia and Serbia share strong relations and described Namibia as a country that has consistently supported international law.

He said the agreement would strengthen cooperation in addressing serious crime, particularly organised crime and international terrorism, while also promoting professional development and training for police officers and senior officials.

Iipumbu reaffirmed Namibia’s commitment to implementing the MoU, expressing confidence that the partnership would deliver long-term benefits for both countries.
