SOUTH Africa will mark its return to the FIFA World Cup after a 16-year absence when Bafana Bafana take on hosts Mexico in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on 11 June at Mexico City Stadium.
The fixture will launch the biggest World Cup in history, featuring 48 teams, 104 matches and 16 host cities spread across Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Mexico City Stadium, which previously hosted World Cup opening matches in 1970 and 1986, will become the first venue to stage three FIFA World Cup opening games. The stadium has a capacity of 83,000 and is expected to host several knockout-stage matches in addition to the tournament opener.
South Africa secured qualification after missing the previous three World Cups and will be making its first appearance at the global showpiece since hosting the tournament in 2010. The return comes amid renewed optimism following the recent success of South African club football, including Mamelodi Sundowns’ impressive performances at the FIFA Club World Cup.
Bafana Bafana’s last World Cup campaign came on home soil in 2010, where they drew 1-1 with Mexico in the opening match, lost 3-0 to Uruguay and concluded their campaign with a memorable 2-1 victory over France.
The 2026 tournament draw placed South Africa in Group A alongside hosts Mexico, Korea Republic and Czechia.
Mexico, meanwhile, is preparing for its 18th World Cup appearance and will become the first country to host the tournament on three occasions. El Tri will play all three of their group-stage matches in Mexico, opening in Mexico City before travelling to Guadalajara for their second fixture and returning to the capital for their final group match.
The North Americans will be looking to improve on their disappointing 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar, where they failed to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since 1978.
The opening match is expected to draw global attention as South Africa begins its latest World Cup journey against the host nation in one of football’s most historic venues.
