SWISS leisure airline Edelweiss says growing demand for nature-based tourism and Namibia’s strong positioning as a premium safari and adventure destination were key factors behind its decision to launch direct flights between Zurich and Windhoek.
The airline recently introduced the route as part of its long-haul leisure expansion strategy, with Namibia identified as a standout destination within its African network due to its landscapes, wildlife experiences and appeal to high-end leisure travellers.
According to Edelweiss spokesperson, Namibia aligns closely with the airline’s target market, which prioritises authentic, nature-based travel experiences.
“Namibia offers a unique combination of safaris, vast landscapes, individuality and high-quality travel experiences, which match very well with the leisure profile of Edelweiss guests,” Edelweiss spokesperson said.
The decision to launch the route was also supported by strong and steadily growing demand from Swiss travellers. According to the Namibia Airports Company (NAC), Switzerland is one of Namibia’s most important European source markets, ranking fifth in 2025 with an estimated 24,200 two-way passengers, while volumes increased by 9% compared to 2024.
Edelweiss initially planned two weekly flights between Zurich and Windhoek but increased the frequency to three weekly flights for its inaugural season due to strong early demand. The airline is now considering extending the operating season next year, with potential flights starting as early as March.
The carrier expects to transport approximately 29,000 passengers annually on the route, with most expected to be leisure travellers from Switzerland, Germany and other European markets seeking safari and adventure experiences.
The direct connection is expected to further boost Namibia’s tourism sector by improving access from a key European market. NAC data shows that Namibia’s international connectivity continues to expand, with the number of direct or non-stop destinations rising from 10 in 2023 to a projected 17 by mid-2026.
While Edelweiss continues to explore opportunities across Africa, the airline has not yet announced any additional destinations on the continent. The new route reflects confidence in Namibia’s tourism offering and long-term growth potential.
The Zurich–Windhoek route officially commenced on 1 June 2026, when the inaugural Edelweiss Airbus A350-900 flight landed at Hosea Kutako International Airport carrying 285 passengers, marking the first non-stop commercial air link between Switzerland and Namibia.
