PRESIDENT Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has hailed the newly opened Goreangab Mall in Katutura, Windhoek, as a symbol of efforts to reverse the legacy of inequality and exclusion.
“There was a time when development, investment and major commercial infrastructure were concentrated in the city centre and elsewhere, while areas such as Katutura carried the social and economic burden of apartheid spatial planning. The opening of this mall, therefore, carries significance far beyond bricks and mortar. It represents another step in reversing the legacy of exclusion and bringing opportunities closer to the people,” the President said.
She made these remarks at the official opening of the Goreangab Mall, which she described as a highly commendable achievement that represents not only economic investment but also hope, opportunity and confidence.
“In many ways, this development tells a powerful story. A community that was once created through forced removal is today attracting investment, creating jobs and shaping its own economic future. That is a story of resilience, progress and transformation,” President Nandi-Ndaitwah said.
The President noted that the mall would expose young people in the area to a wider range of economic opportunities by bringing businesses, services and career prospects closer to where they live. She revealed that around 300 jobs were created during the mall’s construction phase, and the mall is expected to generate nearly 400 jobs now that it is complete.
“For many residents, this mall is not simply a place to shop. It means spending less time and money, as you will no longer have to travel long distances to access services such as banking facilities, restaurants, pharmacies and other essential amenities. For families and individuals, every dollar saved on transport matters. By bringing these services closer to where people live, this development improves convenience, reduces costs and contributes meaningfully to the quality of everyday life,” President Nandi-Ndaitwah added.
