A 51-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested in Windhoek for allegedly using a fake proof of payment to fraudulently obtain goods, as authorities uncover a suspected fraud network linked to similar scams.
The suspect, Charles Poenie Toko, was apprehended through intelligence-led policing after he reportedly returned to a local company for a second time to acquire car parts of an unspecified value using a forged payment confirmation.
According to Windhoek City Police Service (WCPS), the scam involves suspects presenting fake bank proof of payment documents to secure goods, which are then collected using rental trucks.
Toko has since appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court, where he was granted bail of N$3,000. He is expected to make his next court appearance on 8 June 2026.
The Windhoek City Police has urged businesses and the public to remain vigilant and to verify all payments and proof of payment documents before releasing any goods.
Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious activities to the Windhoek City Police Service at 061 302 302, via SMS to 4444, or at their nearest police station.
