NAMIBIA marked its 36th Independence Day today under the theme “Beyond 36: For a Prosperous Future,” with Vice President Lucia Witbooi urging citizens to build on the nation’s achievements and work collectively for inclusive development.

Speaking in Karasburg in the //Kharas Region, Witbooi reflected on Namibia’s independence on 21 March 1990, achieved through the courage and sacrifices of the country’s freedom fighters under the leadership of founding president Sam Nujoma. She emphasised that the country’s freedom must inspire collective responsibility and socio-economic transformation across all regions.

The Vice President highlighted government priorities under the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6), including agriculture, youth empowerment, education, creative industries, healthcare, social welfare, and housing. She called on Namibians, particularly the youth, to seize opportunities such as the National Youth Development Fund and vocational training initiatives to contribute to national growth.

Witbooi also praised the progress made in the //Kharas Region, citing developments such as the Keetmanshoop Vocational Training Centre, the expansion of agriculture along the Orange River, and infrastructure projects improving water, sanitation, electrification, and road networks. She said ongoing initiatives in renewable energy and green hydrogen as key drivers of the region’s industrialisation and sustainable economic growth.

While acknowledging these achievements, Witbooi recognised remaining challenges, including gaps in housing, water, sanitation, and industrial activity, urging continued collective effort from government, the private sector, civil society, and citizens to ensure no Namibian is left behind.

The Vice President concluded by paying tribute to Namibia’s former and current leaders, as well as historical figures who fought against foreign occupation, stressing that unity, innovation, and shared purpose remain essential to building a prosperous and inclusive nation.

“Let us work together to advance development, strengthen democracy, and uplift the living standards of all our people. Happy 36th Independence Anniversary,” she said.
