SCHOOLS will continue as normal on Friday, 20 March, despite the planned pre-Independence Day celebrations in Windhoek. Khomas regional leadership has called on residents to attend the two-day programme, while Deputy Minister of Education Balloti emphasised that only invited learners and institutions are expected to participate in the organised activities.
The update was shared during an information session hosted by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, where Khomas Governor Sam Shafishuna Nujoma and Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture Dino Balloti outlined the planned activities.
Governor Nujoma invited residents to attend the main Independence Day event on 21 March at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Katutura East, with gates opening at 06:00 and transport arrangements in place across constituencies. The official programme will begin at 09:00, featuring a parade, national and African Union anthems, speeches, and cultural performances.
Ahead of the main event, a youth-focused programme will take place on Friday, 20 March. Activities will begin with a march from Palm Tree Park to Zoo Park, followed by speeches, including an Independence Day message by City of Windhoek Mayor Sackarias Uunona, as well as exhibitions and a talent showcase during the day. The pre-Independence festivities, dubbed “Nam@36 Fest!,” will conclude the day at the City of Windhoek parking area.
Authorities have encouraged residents, students, and institutions of higher learning to participate in the celebrations, describing the two-day programme as an opportunity to reflect on Namibia’s independence while promoting youth engagement and national unity.
