THE Tsumeb Municipality has revealed that the town has only 14 primary and secondary schools, serving over 10,000 learners, highlighting the urgent need to address school overcrowding.
“Tsumeb currently has 14 primary and secondary schools, including two private schools, serving over 10,000 learners. Rapid population growth—from 19,275 residents in 2022 to an estimated 34,960 in 2023—has placed increasing pressure on existing school facilities. Some classrooms operate at a teacher-to-learner ratio of 1:40, while learners from areas such as Kuvukiland must travel long distances to attend schools like Ondundu Primary School,” the municipality explained.

The municipality emphasised its commitment to tackling the overcrowding issue and revealed that it is already identifying land for the development of new schools. Hilma Nuunyango-George, Director of Education for the Oshikoto Region, confirmed that the Directorate plans to prioritise a new primary school by the 2027 school term, subject to land availability.
“The Tsumeb Municipality will assist in identifying and allocating suitable land to support the development of new school infrastructure and improve access to quality education,” the municipality assured.
