MINISTERS Inge Zaamwani and Fillemon Wise Immanuel of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, and Justice and Labour respectively, have recently met with at least four fishing companies to discuss the Government Employment Redress Programme to reintegrate workers into the fishing industry following recent job losses at Walu Fishing.
According to a statement issued by the Fisheries ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda, the Government plans to reintegrate 222 employees into the fishing industry through agreements with four interested companies.
According to Muyunda, each company will be granted an employment redress quota aligning with the number of workers they employ, supporting job creation measures.
The ministers expressed the GRN’s commitment to fair and transparent employment practices, equitable distribution of marine resources, and zero tolerance for exploitation, said Muyunda.
Companies were cautioned against unfair dismissal and poor labour practices, and employees were reminded to adhere to their contract terms.
The ministries will submit a joint Cabinet submission regarding the Programme, including recommendations to address issues within the programme.
“This initiative reflects the Government’s commitment to safeguarding existing employment and fostering job opportunities in the fishing sector,” said Muyunda.
