Too few employers, warns Trustco CEO

Staff Reporter

TRUSTCO founder and chief executive Quinton van Rooyen has warned that Namibia faces a growing job-creation crisis, saying the country has too few employers to support the number of people seeking work.

Van Rooyen shared these remarks on his social media page (https://www.facebook.com/qvr.trustco) while highlighting labour market figures indicating that Namibia’s population of about three million people is supported by only around 15 228 employers.

According to the data, this means that each employer effectively carries the responsibility of creating opportunities for nearly 200 people who need employment.

Van Rooyen, stressed the situation reflects more than just an unemployment problem, describing it instead as a structural challenge related to insufficient job creation in the economy.

He stated that economic dignity begins with opportunity, which in turn depends on individuals and businesses willing to invest, build companies and employ others.

Van Rooyen further cautioned that no nation can sustain long-term economic stability if it consumes resources faster than it creates employment opportunities.

The figures referenced in the discussion were sourced from research by Cirrus Capital.
