The North: Good rains, excellent grazing, and the prospects of a good harvest

THE northern regions of Namibia, which in recent years were devastated by recurring severe droughts, have received good rains this season, leading to the recovery and improvement of grazing and increasing prospects of a good harvest for local subsistence farmers, who now have their hands full cultivating their fields while simultaneously looking after their livestock to prevent them from straying into their neighbors’ fields.

Crisscrossing the region, an Informante team observed that over the weekend, children either join their parents in the fields or help look after the livestock. Some kids use the opportunity to collect bird plum fruits (eembe) to sell along the main roads, thereby earning quick pocket money for themselves.

Practically all water pans and flood plains are full of rainwater, and with the continuing downpours on both sides of the Namibia-Angola border, the annual floodwaters of efundja can be expected soon.
