THREE memorial services for former minister Erkki Nghimtina, who died on 8 February at the age of 78, will be held for three consecutive days at his residence in Edundja village, Oshikango Constituency, Ohangwena Region, to be followed by his Military Funeral at the Eenhana Memorial Shrine on Saturday.
The SWAPO Party memorial service takes place tomorrow (Wednesday), and a community memorial service and State memorial service follow on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has accorded the late former minister and veteran of the liberation struggle, Colonel (retired) Nghimtina, a Military Funeral.
Having served as the head of communications of SWAPO’s military wing, the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN), until the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 435 in 1989, Nghimtina joined the government at independence in 1990 as the head of communications of the newly created Namibian Defence Force (NDF) with the rank of Colonel.
He later switched to politics and held several ministerial positions before his retirement in 2020.
For the late Nghimtina, retirement did not mean inactivity. He continued to play a role in the community as a philanthropist, poultryman, and livestock and crop farmer.
Notably, he used his own money to construct a local SWAPO Party office, spending approximately N$400,000 on the project.
