ANIMAL-RELATED road crashes are a recurring road safety concern, with accidents involving donkeys and cattle being the most common in the northern regions of Namibia.
To address the problem, the Ministry of Works and Transport has launched the Animal Visibility Pilot Project targeting three regions: Omusati, Oshana and Khomas.
The project was launched by the Minister of Works and Transport, Veikko Nekundi, at Embumba village in the Omusati Region on Friday.
The initiative, which forms part of the Ministry’s broader road safety strategy, will initially distribute reflective collars to improve the visibility of domestic animals on or near roads, particularly at night when visibility is low. According to the Ministry, reflective ear tags will be introduced at a later stage as the project expands.
The reflective collars and/or ear tags will be attached to animals such as cattle, donkeys, horses, goats, sheep and dogs.
The pilot project will run for three to six months, after which a countrywide rollout will begin.
