Foreign nationals robbed at Oshakati

Staff Reporter

ONE suspect was apprehended after four foreign nationals — a 71-year-old German man and three Swiss women aged 31, 59, and 65 — were targeted by robbers recently while passing through Oshakati on their way to a wedding ceremony at Outapi in the Omusati Region. Other suspects are still at large.

The robbery occurred at a resting place on the outskirts of the town, where the victims stopped to rest after travelling non-stop from Tsumeb.

It is alleged that the victims, who were travelling in two rental Toyota pickups, were approached by four unknown suspects in a cream Toyota Passo (N35912SH), who falsely claimed that one of the victims’ vehicles had a flat tyre and offered to assist.

However, they turned violent immediately after their offer was rejected, smashing both vehicles’ windows with stones. In the process, they shot and injured one of the victims in her left lower leg and also used knives to threaten the other victims not to move while the robbery was in progress.

Stolen property includes two waist bags with documents, passports, and credit cards, cash, and a cellphone.

The victims informed the police that they saw the specific vehicle following them and being driven recklessly as they exited the town, and they photographed it.

The injured victim was taken to hospital in stable condition and was discharged after treatment.

The police have apprehended a 35-year-old suspect, the driver. The car has also been impounded. The other suspects are still at large, but the police know who they are.
