TWO male suspects were arrested by the police in the Omuntele policing area of the Oshikoto Region after they allegedly robbed an elderly man who had just collected his old-age pension on Friday.
The incident occurred in Onakagala village at around 19:00 while the 81-year-old victim was returning home after collecting his pension money at a pay point in Onamavo village and after having visited local shebeens.
According to the police, the two suspects grabbed the victim from behind and robbed him of N$2,500.
Like all recipients of the government’s social grants, the elderly received their September and October monies (N$3,200) at once as part of the transition from the outgoing social grants distributor, Epupa Investment Technology, to the new distributor, NamPost, which takes over on 1 October.
The two arrested suspects, aged 24 and 26, are expected to appear in court on Monday.
