Central Hospital to host suicide prevention event

Staff Reporter

THE Mental Health Centre of the Windhoek Central Hospital will this Friday host the belated commemorative event of World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), which is observed annually on 10 September.

Earlier this month, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah revealed that Namibia now tops the list of suicide cases in Africa. A total of 542 people took their own lives in Namibia during 2023/2024, “a record no one feels proud about,” she said.

WSPD is observed to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities held around the world since 2003.

This year’s theme is: “Turning the narrative of suicide; turning awareness into action; breaking the silence; end the stigma.”

The Ministry of Health is organising the commemoration in collaboration with the International Association for Suicide Prevention, the World Health Organisation, and the World Federation for Mental Health.
