THE SWAPO Party Youth League (SPYL) has expressed its disappointment with what it said was the misinterpretation by individuals and some media houses of President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s recent remarks during the opening ceremony of the party’s Central Committee meeting in Windhoek on Saturday.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah, who spoke in her capacity as SWAPO president, appealed to the people of Namibia to give the SWAPO Party a full mandate to govern by resoundingly voting for the SWAPO Party in the upcoming Regional Councils and Local Authorities Elections, for the Party to deliver on its promises unhindered.
According to the SPYL secretary, Ephraim Nekongo, the President’s remarks were deliberately misinterpreted.
“The President was alluding to how development has been hindered in local authorities where the SWAPO Party did not have a two-thirds majority as of 2020. She further expressed her disappointment with elected leaders who stage walkouts of local authority meetings for the quorum not to be met, which causes delays or prevents progressive decisions from being made on developmental matters,” said Nekongo, adding that the SPYL concurs with the President’s remarks.
He said that it was an undeniable fact that local authority meetings were halted due to squabbling among councillors, especially in the City of Windhoek, which entered the year without a mayor, deputy mayor, or chairperson of the management committee due to repeated delays in elections for office bearers.
“With such leadership styles,” said Nekongo, “no development is taking place, and city affairs are on hold, which affects all of us.”
According to him, President Nandi-Ndaitwah envisioned an administration that delivers services without delay. “The President made a call for Namibians to give her Party their full support by voting for the SWAPO Party, to avoid the aforementioned leadership vacuum,” he said.
He said that the SPYL agrees with the President’s sentiments and rejects coalitions in governance within local authorities.
“Therefore,” he said, “the SPYL calls for voters to vote for the SWAPO Party to secure a commanding majority of seats in all fourteen Regional Councils, fifty-nine (59) Local Authorities, and the National Council during the upcoming elections.”
