A SERIES of road accidents across Namibia over the weekend claimed five lives and left others injured. According to the police weekend report, incidents ranged from head-on collisions and rollovers to hit-and-run cases and alcohol-related crashes.
At Outapi, 23-year-old Jonas Moses Mwadinange died after being trapped in his Opel Corsa for over 30 minutes following a head-on collision with a Toyota Wish. He was rescued by community members but succumbed to his injuries at Outapi State Hospital.
At Uukwedhidhi, Oshakati, a head-on collision between a Mazda Demio and a Hyundai claimed the life of 61-year-old Ambunda Jacob Ipinge. Several others were hospitalised with injuries.
At Ongwediva, 66-year-old Hafeni Lukas died when his Toyota Hilux overturned along the Omagongati gravel road on Friday evening. He was believed to be alone.
In Katutura, a driver of a Toyota Etios Cross died instantly after losing control and crashing into a bridge pillar at Brakwater on Friday night.
In Oshakati, Gabriel Tuhalukeni died when an Isuzu double cab overturned at Ompumbu. The driver and three passengers were injured.
At Okuryangava, Wanaheda, a 4-year-old boy was injured after being run over by a Hilux while crossing the street. He was rushed to Katutura State Hospital.
In Maltahöhe, an 18-year-old man was arrested after allegedly driving a Toyota Hilux recklessly, causing a 7-year-old boy to fall from the loading box and sustain slight injuries. The suspect reportedly drove on without checking on the victim and did not have a valid driver’s licence.
Another serious crash occurred at Olunkono, between Ondangwa and Ongwediva, when a Nissan Tiida travelling in the wrong lane collided with a Toyota GD6 double cab. The suspect was arrested on charges including drunk driving.
In Katima Mulilo, a Nissan driver allegedly reversed into a Ford Ranger while under the influence of alcohol. No injuries were reported.
Another accident at Okandjengedi, Oshakati, involved a sideswipe between two Toyota vehicles. No injuries were reported.
In Ondangwa, a VW Polo crashed into a fuel pump at a service station before the driver and passenger fled the scene. Alcohol bottles were found inside the abandoned vehicle.
Police investigations into all incidents are ongoing.
