Police urge road safety ahead of Heroes’ Day commemoration

Staff Reporter

THE Namibian Police Force has issued a road safety appeal to motorists ahead of the Heroes’ Day commemoration, scheduled for Tuesday, 26 August 2025, in Katima Mulilo, Zambezi Region.

Police said they anticipate heavy traffic on all major routes leading to the host town as thousands of citizens are expected to travel for the national event.

Motorists are urged to exercise maximum caution, plan their trips in advance, and remain patient in order to avoid delays caused by congestion.

The police reminded road users to:
– Obey all traffic rules and regulations.
– Avoid speeding, reckless overtaking, and driving under the influence.
– Rest adequately before long-distance travel to prevent fatigue.
– Ensure vehicles are roadworthy, including checking tyres, brakes, and lights.
– Remain courteous and considerate towards other road users.

Citizens are further encouraged to report reckless, negligent, or unlawful driving to the police.

Law enforcement officers will conduct roadblocks along national roads and intensify patrols in Katima Mulilo to ensure compliance and safeguard lives.

“The priority is to reduce accidents and ensure that everyone arrives safely to commemorate the day in peace,” the police said, adding that road safety requires a collective effort.

They further urged the public to honour the nation’s heroes not only through remembrance, but also by ensuring safety on the roads “through responsible and heroic actions.”
