Cabinet approves hosting of international financial intelligence summit

Staff Reporter

CABINET has granted approval for the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) to host the Egmont Group Plenary in July 2027.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, during a recent Cabinet briefing.

“The Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) is a multilateral international organisation that facilitates cooperation and the sharing of intelligence between national FIUs to investigate and prevent money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation financing,” Theofelus added.

She highlighted that Namibia’s FIC has been a member of the Egmont Group since 4 June 2014. According to her, the upcoming Egmont Group Plenary will also offer financial support to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), as well as to the tourism sector.

“Hosting the event will provide financial injection to micro, small and medium enterprises and the tourism sector, while promoting Namibia as a preferred destination globally; in line with the goals set out under Pillar 1 of the 6th National Development Plan (NDP 6),” the minister added.
