Road users urged to be vigilant

THE Namibian Police Force in the Oshikoto Region has urged all drivers to exercise extreme caution on the roads.

The warning comes following recent accidents in the region.

Oshikoto Head of Community Policing Sub-division, Chief Inspector Ellen Nehale-Kangulu, said the first incident occurred around 20:00 at the Tsumeb intersection on Sunday.

According to Nehale-Kangulu, it is alleged that the driver of a white Toyota Double Cab lost control of the vehicle while travelling from Otavi toward Tsumeb.

“The vehicle veered off the road, collided with a palm tree, and overturned, resulting in damage to the vehicle and injuries to the occupants,” she said.

She added that all injured occupants were admitted to Tsumeb State Hospital and their condition was stable.

Further, Nehale-Kangulu indicated that the second incident occurred around 20:00 near Onalunike village on the B1 road between Omuthiya and Ondangwa, 15 km from Omuthiya.

She alleged that a white Toyota Quantum minibus, travelling from Ondangwa towards Omuthiya, left the road and overturned.

“The driver reportedly swerved to avoid a pedestrian standing in the roadway. The vehicle was carrying 13 passengers. One male passenger died at the scene,” she added.

Nehale-Kangulu noted that the remaining passengers and the driver were transported to Omuthiya District Hospital for medical attention and were later discharged.

She then stressed that road users should remain alert at all times and avoid any distractions, particularly at night or in areas with limited visibility.

“Speed limits must be strictly observed, and overtaking should only be carried out when it is safe,” she said.

She added that both motorists and pedestrians should stay vigilant—pedestrians should avoid walking or standing on the road, especially in poorly lit areas.

Nehale-Kangulu emphasised that road safety is a shared responsibility. “Let us all work together to prevent accidents and save lives.”
