THE Namibia National Farmers Union (NNFU) is urgently calling on the government to operationalise the Northern Communal Areas (NCA) Equalisation Fund.
This crucial fund, approved by Cabinet and initially set to begin in June 2025, is a top priority for the NNFU.
Tomas Kalimbo, the NNFU’s National Executive Member for Treasurer, stressed this need during the official handover of five livestock trucks and portable loading ramps in Ongwediva on Thursday.
Kalimbo highlighted that while the new livestock trucks are a positive step for boosting marketing in the NCA, their true impact hinges on the immediate support of the Equalisation Fund.
“We call on the Ministry to urgently act on other enabling priorities already submitted by the NNFU to your office on several occasions, such as the implementation of the Foot and Mouth Disease-free zones as per the 2nd Land Conference resolution,” he said.
He pressed the Ministry of Agriculture, which is managing the fund’s budget, to ensure its prompt implementation without any further delay.
Beyond the Equalisation Fund, the NNFU has repeatedly emphasised several other critical needs to the Ministry.
Addressing these concerns, the NNFU believes, will significantly ease the burden of the Veterinary Cordon Fence (redline) and ultimately make farming in Namibia’s northern regions more viable and sustainable.
