THE construction of the 100-Megawatt (MW) Sores |Gaib Solar Power Station, a N$1.6 billion project, has officially commenced, with completion scheduled for June 2026.
This was confirmed by the Namibia Power Corporation (NamPower), which revealed that over 300 direct jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase of the project.
“In addition, the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Contractor has committed to allocating 25% of the contract value — equivalent to N$356 million — towards local content. NamPower has prioritised local content participation and skills development as integral components of its implementation strategy,” the corporation highlighted.
NamPower’s total investment in the project stands at N$1.6 billion. The company disclosed that the project is being financed through a combination of a loan from the German development bank, KfW — amounting to approximately N$1.3 billion — with the remaining funds sourced from NamPower’s own reserves.
“Sores |Gaib, which in Khoekhoegowab means ‘Power of the Sun’, will be NamPower’s largest solar PV power station to date. Upon completion, the power station will make a significant contribution to the national energy mix, displacing a considerable portion of imported energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, Sores |Gaib will play a pivotal role in fostering economic development, enhancing energy independence, and strengthening climate resilience in Namibia,” NamPower explained.
NamPower’s Managing Director, Kahenge Haulofu, emphasised that the 100 MW Sores |Gaib Power Station Project represents progress and a long-term commitment to the sustainable development of the country.
“Our country has abundant sunshine, and we as a nation are ready to seize the opportunities that renewable energy offers. The 100 MW Sores |Gaib Power Station is a critical step in fulfilling that potential,” he said at the groundbreaking ceremony.
