THE City of Windhoek is set to receive a grant of €212,750 (approximately N$4.35 million) from Engagement Global gGmbH through its “Nakopa – Sustainable Community Development through Partnership Projects” program.
This funding will support the establishment of the Windhoek Solar Centre, in partnership with the City of Berlin.
Lydia Amutenya, public relations officer within the City of Windhoek, explained that, modelled after the successful Berlin Solar Centre, the Windhoek Solar Centre will serve as an independent information and knowledge hub aimed at promoting the adoption of solar energy throughout the city.
“It will provide impartial, product-neutral consultations, as well as customized training and awareness programs focused on solar technologies, tailored to meet the needs and interests of residents, including those in informal settlements,” Amutenya said.
She added that this initiative also aims to educate and empower residents, institutions, and community stakeholders by showcasing the benefits and potential of solar energy.
“By facilitating informed decision-making, the Centre is expected to contribute significantly to the widespread adoption of renewable energy solutions throughout Windhoek. This project marks a significant step forward in strengthening the city’s energy infrastructure and reinforces Windhoek’s ongoing commitment to sustainable and resilient urban development,” Amutenya concluded.
