THE Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, Dr Mac Albert Hengari, has emphasised the ministry’s commitment to accelerating agricultural production, particularly through the development and expansion of green schemes.
“A focus on enhancing agricultural production through the expansion of irrigation systems is critical. It is imperative that we develop new green schemes, expand existing ones, and ensure that all are fully operational to boost national food production and ensure food security. We must also ensure the continuous availability of essential agricultural inputs to support small-, medium- and large-scale farmers,” he said.

Dr Hengari made these remarks during a Meet and Greet event with ministry officials, where he identified accelerating agricultural production as a key focus area over the next five years.
He further revealed that the ministry will work to improve agricultural productivity and food security by formulating and implementing comprehensive policies and strategies. These will be aimed at increasing output, ensuring consistent food availability, and enhancing technical capacity for both commercial and subsistence farmers.
“This, together with the provision of veterinary and plant health services, will lay a firm foundation for improved agricultural productivity, increased food security, and the creation of opportunities for sustainable growth within the sector,” the minister said.
Hengari highlighted that the ministry will also prioritise other key areas, including developing and enhancing the capacity of agro-industries, promoting the blue economy, improving water supply infrastructure, strengthening bilateral agreements and regional cooperation, expediting land reform, and acquiring commercial agricultural farms.
“To effectively and efficiently implement our programmes, projects and activities, I expect full commitment and dedication from every one of us. In serving our people, each one of us must uphold the principles of honesty, fairness, integrity, professionalism and servanthood. I believe the ministry has its own service charter, broken down at directorate level, which sets out service standards to the public—our customers. I expect full implementation of the ministry’s service charter,” he added.
