Opuwo’s water infrastructure severely damaged by floods

Staff Reporter

THE Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) has announced that they are currently responding to a major water supply disruption in Opuwo, following severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall last night.

According to NamWater, several critical components of the water infrastructure have been affected. These include the feeder pipelines transporting water from the boreholes to the collector reservoir, which have been washed away. NamWater also revealed that the treatment plant, western borehole, and at least four pipeline sections have also sustained significant damage, while the water in the collector reservoir has been depleted.

“Our maintenance team has been deployed and is en route to Opuwo to assess the full extent of the damage and begin emergency repair work. As an interim measure, a NamWater tanker truck has been dispatched to supply essential services with water,” NamWater said.

The Corporation explained that the response plan includes the assessment of all boreholes connected to the treatment plant, the deployment of emergency pipelines where necessary, and the mobilisation of equipment and manpower to restore operations as quickly and safely as possible.

“We acknowledge the disruption this may cause to residents and businesses in Opuwo and affected areas of the North West Business Unit, and we are working around the clock to restore supply,” NamWater added.
