THE SWAPO Party Youth League (SPYL) has distanced itself from a member of its Central Committee, Petrus Hatupopi, who was recently arrested on suspicion of fraudulent activities.
According to a statement by SPYL Secretary Ephraim Nekongo, Hatupopi engaged in deceptive practices, falsely representing to individuals that he had been awarded a tender by the SWAPO Party, thereby soliciting funds with promises of repayment contingent upon the realization of profits from the purported tender.
“The SPYL wishes to unequivocally distance itself from the actions of Comrade Hatupopi. We want to clarify that his conduct does not reflect the principles, values, or interests of the SWAPO Party, the SPYL, or the broader party membership. We did not authorize or send him to engage in any activities related to the alleged tender, and we are committed to upholding the highest standards of ethical conduct and integrity within our ranks and across all our activities,” said Nekongo, adding that the SPYL strongly condemns any form of fraudulent behaviour.
He urged the public to exercise extreme caution and vigilance against individuals who may attempt to exploit the name of the SWAPO Party or its affiliates for personal gain.
He advised the community to be wary of any solicitations that appear suspicious or involve promises of financial returns based on unverified claims of party-related tenders or projects.
He also encouraged members of the public to report any suspected fraudulent activities immediately to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
Said Nekongo: “Your cooperation in this matter is crucial in preventing further exploitation and safeguarding the public from financial harm.”
According to him, the leadership of the SPYL is seized with the matter and is taking all necessary steps to address the situation appropriately.
He promised to provide updated information as developments warrant. “The SPYL remains committed to transparency and accountability in all its dealings,” he said.
