THE Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Dr. Peya Mushelenga, expressed the country’s deep concern regarding the worsening conflicts in the Republic of Sudan and the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), emphasising that these conflicts are resulting in humanitarian crises.

He made these remarks during the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) meeting, which took place over the weekend alongside the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The meeting was chaired by Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea and the AU PSC Chairperson for February 2025.

At the meeting, Mushelenga raised concerns about the escalating conflicts in Sudan and eastern DRC, calling for an immediate ceasefire in both regions. He also urged the PSC to reaffirm the AU’s collective responsibility as outlined in Article 4(o) of the AU’s Constitutive Act, which stresses the importance of respecting human life, rejecting impunity, and condemning terrorism and subversive actions.

Attendees included AU PSC members, concerned Member States, senior officials from the AU Commission, representatives of affected Regional Economic Communities/Regional Mechanisms, as well as representatives from the League of Arab States and the United Nations.
