More intense showers predicted for this weekend

Staff Reporter

HEAVY rainfall is expected to continue and spread to various regions across the country this weekend.

According to the Namibia Meteorological Services, the heaviest showers are anticipated in the Zambezi, Kavango East, Otjozondjupa, and Omaheke regions. Rundu has been identified as one of the places that will experience showers throughout the weekend, and likely on Monday as well.

However, the anticipated rainfall will likely not be confined to the aforementioned regions. The Namibia Meteorological Services also highlighted Ondangwa, Keetmanshoop, and Windhoek as some of the areas that will likely experience rainfall this weekend.

Since the Zambezi, Kavango East, Otjozondjupa, and Omaheke regions are expected to receive heavy showers, flash floods in some areas within these regions are also likely. The Namibia Meteorological Services therefore advises the public to remain cautious this weekend, particularly around rivers, streams, and water crossing points.

This flash flood warning has also been reiterated by the Hydrological Services of Namibia, which has recommended the activation of contingency plans for flood risk management and recovery, especially in the northern, flood-prone regions, including the western part of the Cuvelai Catchment and the northern Kunene region.

The Hydrological Services further predicted that moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to persist in the central, north-central, and north-eastern parts of the country until 20th February.
