A NISSAN pickup truck travelling between Mangetti and Tsumkwe in the Otjozondjupa region, carrying 22 passengers—mostly schoolchildren—overturned on Monday morning, killing two passengers. One died at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries on the way to the Tsumkwe Clinic.
The other 20 passengers and the 52-year-old driver sustained serious to moderate injuries and were taken to the Grootfontein District Hospital by MVA Fund ambulances.
However, one of the ambulances overturned while on the way to the scene of the accident. Fortunately, no one was injured.
According to the police, the initial accident occurred on the C44 gravel road, about 23 kilometers from Tsumkwe, at around 09:20 on Monday.
It is alleged that the driver of a white Nissan pickup (N6262G) lost control of the vehicle after the left rear shaft broke, causing the vehicle to overturn.
The police said that most of the passengers were schoolchildren returning to school after attending a funeral in Mangetti over the weekend.
The deceased were identified as Elizabeth Kambara and Frans Chameia, aged 18 and 19, respectively.
