THE Namibian police are searching for a possible drowning victim after an 87-year-old man was swept away with his car while crossing a river in Auasblick, Windhoek.
According to Chief Inspector Elifas Kuwinga of the Namibian police, the suspected drowning incident happened on Tuesday, 4 February 2025, at approximately 15:37.
Kuwinga explained that it is further alleged that two women, aged 47 and 49, were passengers in a small hatchback vehicle driven by the 87-year-old male driver.
“The driver was in the process of dropping them off at a bus stop when the incident took place.
While attempting to cross the river on Sean McBride Street in Auasblick, the vehicle became stuck. As water levels rapidly rose, flooding the car, the current began to sweep it away. The two women managed to exit the vehicle; however, the driver remained inside,” Chief Inspector Kuwinga said.
He added that the vehicle, along with the driver, was carried away by the strong floodwaters.
**”It eventually came to a stop near the bridge under Robert Mugabe Avenue, having been swept from Sean McBride Street through Jason Wanahepo Ndadi Street, covering a distance of over a kilometre. Upon inspection, no one was found inside.
The Emergency Services are actively searching for the missing individual or hoping to recover his body,”** Kuwinga concluded.
