Three men arrested for selling dog for kapana in Swakopmund

Staff Reporter

THREE men are due to appear in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court today after they allegedly killed a dog and sold it for kapana in the DRC settlement in Swakopmund.

The owner of the dog, Catherine Titus, explained that she discovered her two dogs had gone missing from her residence in Maturura, Swakopmund, between 12:00 and 13:00 on 1 February 2025.

“I drove around to look for them as I thought they were just somewhere in the neighbourhood. However, my neighbour called me and said that someone saw my dogs in the DRC settlement,” she added.

She further said that while she recovered her female hound on Saturday, she could not find her male dog. Someone in the DRC neighbourhood pointed her to the street where her dog was killed.

“When I went there, I was told that the dog was sold for kapana. The lady said that she had bought the dog for N$200 and that the dog was already dead,” Titus said.

It is further alleged that the dog was hit on the head with an axe four times by the three arrested male suspects, while a 12-year-old boy who was also implicated has not been arrested.

The suspects are due to appear in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court on charges of cruelty once evidence is consolidated.

“What they did to my dog was cruel. He was a gentle animal who didn’t deserve to be brutally killed that way. He was my protector. They do not understand the loss and pain they have caused,” Titus said.
