Central dams record water level increase

THE water levels of the Swakoppoort, Von Bach, and Omatako dams have increased notably since last week, following recent rainfall.

This was disclosed by the Namibia Water Corporation’s (NamWater) Public Relations Officer, Lot Ndamanomhata, who highlighted that the Omatako Dam recorded the highest inflow over the past week. The dam’s volume more than doubled, rising from 2.2% capacity on 20 January 2025 to 5.3% capacity by Monday, 27 January 2025.

Meanwhile, Ndamanomhata revealed that the Swakoppoort Dam’s water level increased from 23.5% on 20 January 2025 to 24.5% on 27 January 2025, while the Von Bach Dam rose from 23.7% to 24.8% over the same period.

“These positive inflows are a welcome development as they contribute to the water security of the Central Area of Namibia, which relies on these dams for supply,” Ndamanomhata said.

There were also developments regarding the southern dams. NamWater’s Dam Bulletin revealed that the Oanob Dam’s water level rose from 31.1% on 20 January 2025 to 32% on 27 January 2025, while the Neckartal Dam increased from 78.3% to 79.7% during the same period.

However, the Hardap and Naute dams recorded decreases in their water levels. According to NamWater’s Dam Bulletin, the Hardap Dam dropped from 16.3% last Monday to 15.3% on 27 January 2025, while the Naute Dam fell from 28.3% to 27.6% over the same period.

“NamWater continues to monitor the water levels closely and encourages the public to remain conscious of water conservation efforts,” Ndamanomhata added.
