Past weekend marked by strong winds and rain, more expected

Widespread showers dominated this past weekend, with the Otjozondjupa Region, in particular, experiencing strong winds alongside rain showers, resulting in property damage in some cases.

The Otjozondjupa Region’s recent rain and wind storms were captured in several photos and videos shared on social media. One such post shared by Facebook user Odette van der Westhuizen shows the impact of these conditions at a plot near Okahandja on the Hochfeld Road, where strong winds and rain uprooted trees, tore off roofs, shattered doors and windows, and knocked down power poles.

While the weather in the Otjozondjupa Region this weekend was characterised by strong winds and rain, heavy showers in the north once again caused flooding in some areas. Kamanjab, in the Kunene Region, was one such area that experienced substantial rainfall and flooding, as shown in videos shared by Facebook user Remona van Litzenborgh, which depict flooded roads in the north-western town.

Various other places in the country also witnessed rainfall this past weekend, including Windhoek in the Khomas Region, Tsumeb in the Oshikoto Region, and Otjiwarongo and Okahandja in the Otjozondjupa Region, among others.

More rainfall is expected in various regions today and tomorrow. According to the Namibia Meteorological Services, areas in the Zambezi, Kunene, Erongo, Khomas, Hardap, and //Kharas regions can expect rain, with Windhoek and Keetmanshoop specifically forecast to experience showers tomorrow. The windy weather is also expected to persist in the interior on Tuesday.
