The Olushandja Dam crocodile disappears

A CROCODILE recently spotted at the Olushandja Dam in the Omusati Region, which was set to be removed this week, has disappeared into the water and is nowhere to be found.

The Olushandja Dam, also known as Etaka, is a 42.331-million cubic metre lake that stores water from the Kunene River and supplies water to purification plants at Ogongo and Oshakati.

Omusati Regional Police Commander Ismael Basson said that search parties sent to capture and remove the crocodile could no longer locate the reptile.

“The search parties could not find the crocodile. It is also unclear whether it was just one crocodile spotted multiple times or if there are more. Therefore, members of the public must always be mindful that there is a crocodile or possibly crocodiles in the Etaka waters,” said Basson.

In August last year, there was a report about the presence of a crocodile in Etaka, but neither the authorities nor local residents took it seriously.

The crocodile was finally spotted and videographed by Onesi Constituency Councillor Festus Petrus last Friday, the 3rd of January. Plans were promptly made to remove it on the 6th of January and release it into the Kunene River.
