OPM and CoW address challenges faced by relocated flood victims

Staff Reporter

THE City of Windhoek (CoW) and key stakeholders, including the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM_Namibia), the Khomas Regional Council, the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture – Namibia, and the Ministry of Health and Social Services – Namibia, met on 9 January 2025 to discuss and address the challenges faced by relocated residents.

Sites for police and medical facilities have been demarcated, with construction planned for the medium term. Plans for an educational facility for kindergarten and school-going children affected by the flood are also underway.

The City of Windhoek is improving road networks to enhance access and has ensured adequate roads around the new site. Clean water access remains a priority, with additional water points already planned, including one located just 100 meters from the site.

“We understand the concerns about social amenities and are actively working with our stakeholders to provide essential services such as sanitation, healthcare, and education through a phased approach. Staying in unsafe areas such as riverbeds, especially during unpredictable rainy seasons, is not an option, and this site will be off-limits.

While relocation remains voluntary, safety is a priority. Affected residents should carefully consider this matter and make informed decisions about their safety and well-being.

We thank the residents who have embraced the move for their cooperation and patience as we strive to improve living conditions for all,” the City of Windhoek Municipal Council said.

The Council added that the City remains committed to ensuring dignified living conditions for all.
