AS of 1 December 2024, the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) announced that it has released results from 33 constituencies out of a total of 121, with the Swapo Party leading in both the Presidential and National Assembly ballots.
Over the past weekend, some opposition parties, led primarily by the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), declared their intention to nullify the recently held elections by seeking legal recourse.
“We are determined as a political team to seek remedy from our honourable courts. However, we advise the nation to remain peaceful, to be brotherly and sisterly. Let us ensure vigilance while avoiding actions that might contravene the relevant laws. We are committed to pursuing our remedy within the rule of law,” Dr. Panduleni Itula of the IPC said during a press briefing.
During the announcement of some results yesterday, ECN Chairperson Dr. Elsie Nghikembua expressed gratitude to all Namibians for their patience and commitment to maintaining peace during the election period.
“As the Commission releases these results, we appeal to all agents of candidates and political parties to verify and compare the released results with what their representatives recorded at polling stations and collation centres. The Commission has made computers available at the Central Election Results Centre (CERC) in Windhoek for use by accredited representatives of all 21 contesting political parties. We urge you to make full use of these facilities.
With these releases, we have now published results from 32 constituencies for both the Presidential and National Assembly elections,” Dr. Nghikembua said.
According to the ECN, Swapo leads with 57.08% of votes, followed by IPC with 17.42% and LPM with 6.37% in the National Assembly election.
In the Presidential ballot, Swapo’s candidate garnered 53.69%, followed by IPC’s Dr. Panduleni Itula with 27.8%, and Bernadus Swartbooi of the LPM with 7.49%.
