A 12-YEAR-OLD girl was recently added to the unfortunately growing list of underage rape victims when she was allegedly raped by an unknown suspect while returning home from school.
The alleged rape occurred last week Friday but was only reported to the police this week Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the broad daylight near a cemetery at Oshigambo in the Oniipa Constituency of the Oshikoto Region.
It is alleged that the victim was on her way back home from School when she found an unknown male person sitting under a tree near the cemetery.
He allegedly called her but she ran away. However, the suspect, who was armed with a traditional knife, chased her till she stopped and surrendered to the suspect, who then dragged her to a nearby pit, tied her hands with a rope, undressed her and raped her before releasing her and warning her to not tell anyone about the incident.
But the victim could only keep quiet for four days. On Tuesday she informed a cousin who proceeded to report the matter to the police.
No arrest has been made yet.
Cases of minor girls being sexually assaulted either at home or while on their way to or from school are piling up, so much so that the police are now urging female children to walk in groups when going to or coming from school.
