FORMER Mafwe Litunga Richard Muhinda-Mamili V has passed away at the age of 92 in Rundu Hospital.
In keeping with chieftaincy traditions, he was laid to rest less than 30 hours after his death.
Mamili V was crowned as the Litunga of the Mafwe tribe 53 years ago and served as the seventh leader of the Mafwe community for 16 years. He led the Mafwe tribe from 1972 until 1987, succeeding Noah Mamili IV, who led the tribe from 1944 to 1971.
During his reign, Mamili V also served as Chief Minister in the former Administration for Caprivians, sharing this role with the late Masubia Chief Joshuwa Moraliswani.
Before becoming chief, he worked as a police sergeant in the Botswana Police Service.
He is survived by three wives, 37 children, 122 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
