OHANGWENA Governor Sebastian Ndeitunga has confirmed that 18 people have died from malnutrition in the region this year alone.
Ndeitunga revealed this during the handover of a four-classroom block and a storeroom constructed by the government of Japan at Ndadi Primary School on Wednesday.
“Malnutrition has been confirmed as a serious problem in the Ohangwena Region, leading to 270 hospital admissions and 18 deaths this year alone,” he said.
He added that the support from Japan-funded emergency response projects aimed at mitigating multiple shocks and enhancing resilient livelihoods in Namibia will eventually contribute to food security in the region.
“This project, in partnership with the World Food Programme Namibia, will be implemented in the Kunene and Ohangwena regions for six months,” he said.
He further said that the primary goal is to ensure that drought-affected populations and children most at risk of malnutrition in the Kunene and Ohangwena regions can access proper nutrition.
