NAMIBIA and Germany will jointly host the upcoming Summit of the Future, with President Nangolo Mbumba and Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany co-chairing the event.
The summit, themed “Summit of the Future: Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow,” is scheduled to take place from Friday, 20 September, to Monday, 23 September, in New York, United States of America (USA).
Namibia’s involvement as co-host of the summit is a result of the efforts of the late President Hage Geingob, who engaged in bilateral talks with Chancellor Scholz in September last year regarding their co-leadership of the Summit of the Future.
President Mbumba described Namibia’s co-chair role as an honour, recognising the country as a significant voice that aligns with the aspirations of the Global South. Both President Mbumba and Chancellor Scholz will deliver statements during the opening session of the summit and participate in interactive dialogues covering a range of topics, including strengthening the global system for both current and future generations.
The Namibian Presidency explained that the summit will adopt the Pact for the Future, which President Mbumba will preside over.
“President Mbumba will preside over the adoption of the Pact for the Future, a document that will bind the commitment of world leaders to deal with global challenges facing humanity, including climate change, financing development, rising inequality, conflict, and food security,” the Namibian Presidency explained.
