THE Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Namibia has committed €36.9 million (about N$729 million) to advancing Namibia’s green hydrogen ambitions, particularly in infrastructure development.
EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson and Minister of Mines and Energy Tom Alweendo signed the agreement at the Global African Hydrogen Summit, held this week in Windhoek.
“On behalf of the Namibian people, I would like to thank Team Europe for being our partners and collaborators. I’m equally even happier to know that this funding mechanism is not only going to reform policy like the legislation but it’s actually going to the real infrastructure that we need to build,” Alweendo said.
The Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) highlighted the EU’s support as a significant milestone in positioning Namibia at the forefront of the global energy transition. NIPDB noted that the investment not only advances Namibia’s renewable energy capabilities but also drives economic growth, job creation, and knowledge transfer.
“This generous support from the EU is a testament to the growing international confidence in Namibia’s potential to become a global hub for green hydrogen production. The funds will be pivotal in bolstering critical infrastructure, fostering technological innovation, and accelerating our transition to a low-carbon economy,” NIPDB explained.
