THE Outapi Town Council team is in the process of finalizing preparations for the Mayoral Cup, which will be held at the Olufuko Centre in Outapi.
The Mayoral Cup will kick off on 7 September and conclude on 10 October 2024, promising four days of fun sporting activities.
Town Mayor Selma Asino said this is their first edition, and an investment of N$100,000 was made to ensure the success of the tournament.
According to Asino, there will be two sports categories: soccer for legends and youth, and netball, with other sports to be introduced next year.
She indicated that the main purpose of the tournament is to provide a platform for young people to showcase their talent, as sport is a career, and if they are given a platform, they can achieve a lot.
“It is a platform created to keep the youth busy and prevent them from engaging in socially harmful activities,” she said.
She added that sport is one of the activities that unite Namibians from all walks of life, and they want to build on the legacy of the late President Hage Geingob, who promoted the idea of building one Namibian house where nobody feels left out.
Asino said that it is also a platform to give SMEs an opportunity to sell their products and services, as they aim to boost the local economy, stressing that SMEs are the backbone of any town.
She emphasized that sports keep people healthy, and by doing so, the nation at large is given a platform to exercise and have fun at the same time.
