The National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN), in collaboration with the Potters’ Association of Namibia (PAN), recently hosted the 11th National Ceramics Biennale of Namibia. This prestigious exhibition celebrates pottery and ceramics as art forms that transform humble clay into vessels carrying both the weight of culture and the lightness of creativity. The Biennale, spanning over two decades, features works created by artists over the past two years and is regarded as the most significant event on the calendar for potters and ceramicists in Namibia.
The National Ceramics Biennale provides a platform for artists from all parts of Namibia, whether members of PAN or not, to showcase their talents and creativity. This year, the Potters’ Association of Namibia was honoured to have two distinguished judges who selected the works on display and awarded prizes to the deserving winners.
Artist Mitchell Gatsi was awarded the Premier Award, while Jacqui Jansen van Vuuren took 1st Prize in the Wheelwork category. Lesley Crawford won 2nd Prize, and Genie Albrecht claimed 3rd Prize in the same category. In the Handwork category, Cheryl Gibb, Charlene Vorster, and Caren Oelofse Burger received 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes, respectively.
In the Sculpture category, Johannes Nampala won both 1st and 3rd Prizes, while Betsie van Rensburg secured 2nd Prize. The Rural Potter Award saw Nalishebo Sinvula claim both 1st and 2nd places, with Feronica Mabuku taking 2nd Prize. Kevlyn Gowases was recognized as the Most Promising Beginner, and Melody Rohlfs received the New Signature Award. Johannes Nampala also received the People’s Choice Award.
