SIX people were killed when a helicopter crashed in Zimbabwe’s Marondera rural area east of Harare on Wednesday, with authorities saying the victims included a high-profile businessman, three passengers and two pilots.
Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana confirmed the crash on X, initially reporting that the aircraft was carrying four passengers before later correcting the information to six people in total.
Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said the aircraft crashed at around 17:00 local time and that emergency services had been dispatched to the scene.
Nyathi said the bodies were badly burned and that authorities would need to formally identify the victims.
Family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo told ZBC News that the family was struggling to come to terms with the tragedy and said police would confirm the identities of the victims in due course.
Chivayo, founder of Intratrek Zimbabwe, has links to Namibia through South African printing company Ren-Form CC, which was awarded a contract to print ballot papers for Namibia’s 2024 elections.
