VICE President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah officially inaugurated the newly built Onawa Police Station in the Oshana Region on Friday.

According to Nandi-Ndaitwah, the opening of the Onawa Police Station represents their unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety and security of the communities.

Nandi-Ndaitwah made these remarks during the inauguration and handover of the Onawa Police Station and the handing over of decentralized Build Together program houses on Friday.

Further, Nandi-Ndaitwah said that the area of Onawa is planned for about 3,000 erven, mostly for residents of the informal settlements in Oshakati who were relocated to Onawa.

“As we develop our urban and peri-urban centres in various parts of our country, including Oshakati, we are faced with the challenge of increasing criminal activities. It is for this reason that the Ministry of Safety and Security, through the Namibian Police, responded positively to the call of our people and decided to establish a police station at Onawa,” she said.

She added that the Namibian people deserve to live in a safe and secure area without fear of criminals.

Meanwhile, Minister of Urban and Rural Development Erastus Uutoni indicated that the Oshakati Town Council currently has about 816 applications that need to be approved.

“We know that this program can make a significant impact on many low-income groups within our communities. This program also creates an opportunity for beneficiaries to choose their own builders and can build their houses incrementally,” he said.

He then appealed to the Council to expedite the process with the coordination and support of the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development.

Uutoni also appealed to all residents of local authorities, wherever they are in the country, to always make it their ultimate responsibility to honour their municipal services on time, to further assist councils in reinvesting in the development of their towns.

Meanwhile, Oshana Regional Governor Elia Irimari said that the establishment of the Onawa Police Station is not just the construction of a building; it is a symbol of their unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order, protecting citizens, and ensuring a safe environment where all can thrive.

“The police station will serve as a beacon of hope, where justice will be upheld, and the safety of our residents will be prioritized,” he said.

Irimari indicated that this initiative reflects their ongoing efforts to decentralize essential services, bringing services closer to the people to ensure that development reaches every corner of their region.

He then urged all residents to continue working together, hand in hand, as they strive to build a safer, more prosperous, and united region.
