Agriculture Ministry lifts veterinary restrictions in Opuwo due to lung sickness

Staff Reporter

THE Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform has announced the lifting of all restrictions imposed following the outbreak of lung sickness in cattle in Opuwo, Kunene region.

Dr. Johannes Shoopala, Chief Veterinary Officer-designate, said that following the reported case of Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia on 1st July 2024, in a herd of cattle at Okapundja village in the Opuwo State Veterinary District, the Directorate of Veterinary Services successfully vaccinated 1,238 cattle at 14 crush pens.

“Relatedly, all nine cattle that tested positive were successfully slaughtered, and no new case was reported outside the herd that tested positive. Consequently, the Directorate of Veterinary Services would like to announce the lifting of all restrictions imposed as a result of this outbreak, with immediate effect,” Shoopala said.

He added that the Directorate would like to caution farmers that, despite the lifting of restrictions, other disease control activities will continue. Farmers are required by law to report any suspicious cases of lung sickness to the nearest state veterinary office.

“The Directorate would like to thank all stakeholders, particularly farmers, the Namibian Police, as well as staff members of the Directorate of Veterinary Services, for their cooperation and assistance in fighting this outbreak,” Dr. Shoopala concluded.
