AT LEAST three people sustained serious injuries when violence broke out at a fundraising event at Oshakati on Friday evening. One of the victims is still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital, while two others were given medical care and then discharged.
The incident began with the alleged snatching of a cellphone at an event organized at the Okatana Service Station by the Zalekandje Uupenda Choir, a component of Muwambo Musical Works.
According to eyewitnesses and police officers who attended the scene, a suspect snatched a cellphone from a member of the choir and ran into a nearby house with a number of choir members in pursuit.
A choir member reported that the fleeing suspect locked himself in a room, and a group of young males in the house attacked the pursuers with empty bottles, stones, and a hammer. Two choir members sustained serious injuries.
“The choir leader is still in the ICU in serious condition, and another choir member was treated for injuries and discharged,” said a choir spokesperson.
There was also a casualty on the opposing side. Someone who was allegedly attacking the choir leader with a hammer was hit with an empty bottle, apparently a case of “friendly fire.”
At least one suspect was arrested immediately at the scene.
