NCS to release over 2,200 inmates

THE Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) will be releasing 1,421 inmates from correctional facilities and 807 inmates from community supervision.

NCS’ Commissioner General Raphael Hamunyela announced that among the 1,421 inmates from correctional facilities, 313 will be pardoned and 1,108 will be released on reprieve. Of the 807 inmates from community supervision, Hamunyela revealed, 709 will be pardoned and 98 will be released on reprieve.

Hamunyela explained that the inmates from correctional facilities were selected from a total of 4,330, while those from community supervision were chosen from a total of 1,574 offenders.

This decision follows the NCS receiving a Gazette Proclamation regarding the Presidential Pardon and Reprieve, authorising the release of certain offenders, effective 21 March 2024, in accordance with the President’s powers under Article 32(8) of the Namibian Constitution.
