THE Namibian Government has condemned the recent attempted coup d’état in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
“The Government of the Republic of Namibia has taken note with great concern of the political developments in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), following the attempted coup d’état during the early hours of Sunday, 19th May 2024, and condemns it in the strongest terms,” said the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Dr. Peya Mushelenga.
Mushelenga emphasized Namibia’s steadfast commitment to zero tolerance for any seizure of power through unconstitutional means, aligning with the principles enshrined in the African Union (AU), the AU Constitutive Act, and the African Charter on Democratic Elections and Governance. These principles, he stressed, advocate for the condemnation and rejection of any unconstitutional change of governments, in accordance with the AU’s dedication to “Silencing the Guns in Africa.”
“In addition, Namibia welcomes, supports, and aligns itself with the statement made by SADC which reaffirms the commitment of member states to the SADC Protocol on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, which aims to promote peace and security in the region,” the minister added.
Mushelenga assured that Namibia will continue to extend support to the people of the DRC and urged the international community to rally behind essential peace initiatives in the sister country.
